Q&A
Q1: After spending 27 years as an elementary school teacher in Ontario, what inspired you to become a Port Ambassador and volunteer as a cruise ship photographer in PEI?
A1: It is important for me to spend time at the port to promote PEI as one of the best tourist destinations. I feel a strong sense of pride and joy representing and sharing what I know about PEI’s attractions, shopping, and history with cruise guests.
Q2: As someone who now calls PEI home, what are your favorite things to share with visitors about the province, and why do you think they resonate so well with travellers?
A2: My favourite things to share with visitors about PEI include the stunning beaches of our National Park, the places connected to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s life and legacy, and the charming historic downtown with its vibrant restaurants, shops, heritage buildings, and live music. These experiences resonate with travellers because they can feel the genuine warmth and friendliness of our volunteer Ambassadors, who welcome them with smiles and open arms.
Q3: You’ve had the opportunity to connect with travellers from around the world. Can you share a particular interaction or experience with a visitor that has left a lasting impression on you?
A3: Earlier this year, I had a deeply meaningful interaction with a cruise guest visiting Port Charlottetown aboard the Volendam. This voyage was particularly special for her, as she had originally planned to take the cruise with her sister, who had recently passed away. The guest shared that she was on an open-jaw sailing between Boston and Montreal and would be returning the following week.
Moved by her story, I wanted to create a lasting tribute to her sister’s memory. I reached out to The Trophy Hut to create a custom plaque and coordinated with the Prince Edward Island Farm Centre to secure a special place to plant a Shasta daisy, her sister’s favorite flower. When the guest returned to Port Charlottetown, I took her to the Farm Centre’s Legacy Garden, where we planted the daisy together. I now have the honor of caring for that Shasta daisy in her sister’s memory. Making connections like this means the world to me.
Q4: You’re known for capturing incredible photos of cruise ship arrivals at Port Charlottetown. Can you share your approach or any tips you’ve learned over the years to consistently get those perfect shots?
A4: When I receive the latest cruise schedule updates via text from Port Charlottetown, I plan ahead to be in one of my favourite spots in Stratford, where I live. The morning light in Bayside Park and along Michael Thomas Way is ideal for capturing arrivals. I also love taking photos from the Charlottetown waterfront, especially near the 2024 numbers, which offer a unique perspective. Planning and timing are key to consistently getting those perfect shots.
Q5: What do you enjoy most about your role as a Port Ambassador, and how has it enriched your experience of living in Prince Edward Island?
A5: I love meeting, greeting, and chatting with cruise guests. It’s incredibly rewarding to answer their questions and hear their positive feedback. Creating a lasting impression with every guest I meet is something I truly value.
