Charlottetown Port Expansion Project Announced

on Tuesday, 05 June 2018. Posted in Press Releases

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island recognize that strategic investments in public infrastructure—including funding for culture and tourism projects—play a key role in supporting dynamic communities while creating good jobs that help grow the middle class and Canadian businesses.

Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Paula Biggar, Prince Edward Island Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, and Stan MacPherson, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. (CHAI), today announced funding of over $12 million towards the expansion of the Charlottetown Marine Terminal.

The Governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are both contributing up to $4 million through the New Building Canada Fund. CHAI is responsible for all other project costs.

Work includes the expansion of the Charlottetown Marine Terminal South Berth by approximately 270 metres to accommodate two, 330-metre cruise ships simultaneously, while also leaving space for oil tankers and cargo ships.

The larger berth will provide more room for large cruise ships and the growing number of passengers visiting the region each year, improving the experience for tourists as well as those conducting business in the area.
